Soft Confluent Drusen
A 75 year old woman on routine examination: visual acuity 20/xx in the right eye and 20/xx in the left. Biomicroscopic examination of the anterior chamber was significant for mild nuclear sclerosis. Dilated fundus examination revealed confluent soft drusen.

RTA color fundus image shows soft confluent drusen.

RTA screen view shows the blue line (blue arrow) which marks a small pigment epithel detachment.
Note the hyper-reflections above the displacement caused by the PED.
The red arrows point to masking caused by small retinal hemorrhages on 3 successive slits.
The yellow arrows point to a reflection originating deep in the retina caused by soft drusen.

A central slit of the same scan illustrates another PED superior to the fovea.

Soft drusen are displayed as hyper-reflections emanating from the deeper part of the retina. The hyper-reflection affects mainly the signal reflected from the RPE surface, but may be noted in both the retinal surface and RPE signals.

The yellow arrows point to two soft drusen and the blue arrows point to the corresponding drusen on the fundus image.

Screen view of a different patient. the yellow arrow points to the corresponding drusen on the fundus image.
